Flintlock Switch Panel — Important Product & Installation Information
Please read this information before ordering, especially if you intend to relocate or replace an existing factory Defender switch like (Hazard Lights Switch, Rear Fog Light and Rear Wiper).
Flintlock switch panels are universal aftermarket control panels for classic Land Rover Defenders. They are designed to provide a clean, customisable way of controlling additional accessories and selected vehicle functions.
They are not direct plug-and-play OEM replacement switches.
The icon engraved above each switch indicates the function you want that switch to control. It does not mean that the Flintlock switch electrically replicates the original Land Rover switch, connector or factory switching logic for that function.
What You Are Buying
Each Flintlock panel is made to order with 4, 5, 6 or 7 switch positions and custom laser-engraved icons selected by the customer.
Unless otherwise stated, your order includes:
- Flintlock switch panel
- selected toggle switches
- custom laser engraving
- mounting hardware
Not Included
The following are not supplied:
- vehicle wiring harness
- automotive relays
- fuses
- vehicle-specific connectors or adapters
- diodes
- control modules
- vehicle-specific wiring diagrams
- electrical installation
Final integration into the vehicle must be determined by the installer.
Functions Our Switches Are Best Suited For
Flintlock switches are particularly well suited to straightforward relay-controlled and momentary functions such as:
- auxiliary lights
- work lights
- spot lights
- light bars
- additional fog / driving lights
- compressors
- heated seats
- heated accessories (front/back windscreen)
- fan override
- auxiliary pumps
- rear washer
- rear wiper control
- electric window UP / DOWN
- winch IN / OUT control
- actuators
- other custom ON/OFF or momentary accessories
For these types of functions, the Flintlock switch is normally used as a control switch for a relay, contactor or suitable control module.
Switch Types
Depending on the function selected, your panel may be supplied with one of the following switch configurations.
2-Pin ON–OFF — Maintained
A simple single-circuit ON/OFF switch.
Once switched ON, it remains ON until manually returned to OFF.
Best suited to straightforward functions where only one control signal is required.
Typical examples include:
- auxiliary lights
- work lights
- compressor enable
- heated accessories
- fan override
- simple relay-controlled accessories
6-Pin ON–OFF — Maintained
A maintained ON/OFF switch with additional contacts compared with the basic 2-pin version.
It is useful where the installation requires more than one switching connection — for example, one contact controlling a relay and another being available for a separate signal or vehicle-specific function like signal light on dashboard etc.
Not every function will require all six terminals. Unused contacts may remain disconnected.
The installer must identify and verify the switch contacts before wiring.
6-Pin DPDT (ON)–OFF–(ON) — Momentary
A three-position switch with a centre OFF position.
Both ON positions are momentary and automatically return to the centre OFF position when released.
This type is particularly suitable for:
- electric window UP / DOWN
- winch IN / OUT
- washer operation
- actuators
- other functions that should operate only while the switch is held
One side may also be used on its own where only a single momentary command is required, such as rear washer operation.
The switch should control the appropriate relay, contactor or control circuit rather than directly powering the motor or accessory.
Factory Switches & Our Approach
At Flintlock Works, our philosophy is to preserve as much of the original Defender as possible.
Just like our other products, the Switch Panel is designed around the vehicle rather than forcing the vehicle to adapt to it. Wherever possible, we use existing factory mounting points and avoid unnecessary drilling, cutting or permanent modifications.
The same approach applies to the electrical system.
Most straightforward factory functions can be relocated to a Flintlock switch using the appropriate switch type, relay and vehicle-specific wiring.
However, we recommend leaving unnecessarily complex factory systems in their original configuration rather than redesigning a working Land Rover circuit simply for appearance.
Hazard Lights
The factory Defender hazard switch is the main exception.
Unlike a conventional ON/OFF function, the original hazard switch controls multiple circuits simultaneously, including the flasher system and the left- and right-hand indicator circuits.
Our standard Flintlock switches are therefore not direct plug-and-play replacements for the factory hazard switch.
Relocating the hazard function is possible, but additional relays, interface wiring or a dedicated electrical solution may be required.
For the simplest, most reliable and most OEM-friendly installation, we recommend keeping the original hazard switch in its factory location.
If you still wish to relocate it to the Flintlock panel, please consult an automotive electrician experienced with classic Land Rover Defenders before ordering.

Special Factory Functions
The following functions deserve particular attention.
Hazard Light Function
The factory Defender hazard switch is more complex than a standard ON/OFF switch because it controls multiple electrical circuits at the same time, including the flasher system and the left- and right-hand indicator circuits.
For this reason, our standard Flintlock switches are not a direct plug-and-play replacement for the original hazard switch.
The hazard function can still be relocated to the Flintlock panel, but additional relays, interface wiring or another suitable electrical arrangement may be required.
For the simplest installation, we recommend keeping the original hazard switch in its factory location.
If you would like to relocate the hazard function to the Flintlock panel, we recommend consulting an automotive electrician experienced with classic Land Rover Defenders before ordering.
Rear Wiper
Our maintained ON/OFF switch can be used to control the rear wiper.
However, the Defender rear wiper motor uses a self-park circuit.
When the driver switches the wiper OFF, the motor must still be allowed to complete its sweep and stop in the correct parked position.
The installer must therefore retain or correctly reproduce the original self-park circuit.
The Flintlock switch should not simply disconnect all electrical power to the wiper motor when switched OFF.
Rear Washer
Our 6-pin DPDT (ON)-OFF-(ON) momentary switch is suitable for rear washer control.
One momentary side can be used to trigger the washer pump relay/control circuit.
The washer operates while the switch is held and stops when the switch is released.
Relay Use
Flintlock switches have an electrical rating of 10A @ 12V DC.
However, for maximum safety, reliability and switch life, Flintlock Works recommends that all vehicle accessories are controlled through an appropriately rated automotive relay, contactor or suitable vehicle control module.
The intended arrangement is:
Control supply → Flintlock switch → relay/control circuit → accessory
The Flintlock switch should therefore act primarily as a low-current control device, rather than directly carrying the full accessory load.
This is particularly important for:
- lighting
- heaters
- electric motors
- compressors
- pumps
- winches
- other high-current or inductive loads
Circuit Protection
Every installed circuit must be correctly protected.
The installer is responsible for selecting the appropriate:
- fuse rating
- relay/contact rating
- cable size
- grounding arrangement
- polarity
- circuit protection
- connector type
The fuse must be sized for the circuit being installed — the switch itself is not a circuit-protection device.
Positive & Ground-Side Switching
Classic Defender electrical systems do not all operate in the same way.
Some factory circuits are activated by switching +12V, while others use ground-side switching.
The installer must therefore verify the electrical logic of the specific vehicle and function before connecting the Flintlock switch.
Do not assume that an original Defender switch can be replaced simply by transferring wires to the same number of terminals.

Despite the 10A @ 12V DC switch rating, relay-controlled installation is recommended for all vehicle accessories.
Switch Contact Information
Flintlock Works does not supply vehicle-specific instructions showing how individual Defender wires should be connected to each switch.
The installer must design and verify the integration for the specific vehicle and selected function.
Installation Responsibility
Installation should be carried out by a qualified automotive electrician or an installer experienced with classic Land Rover Defender electrical systems.
The installer is responsible for determining the correct:
- vehicle wiring
- switch connections
- relay configuration
- fuse rating
- cable size
- polarity
- grounding
- control logic
- integration with original Land Rover circuits
- additional components required
Flintlock Works supplies the switch panel and associated switch hardware. Vehicle-specific electrical design and installation are not included.
Before Ordering
If you intend to use your Flintlock panel mainly for additional accessories such as lights, compressors, windows, winch control, washer systems or other simple relay-controlled functions, our switches are well suited to these applications.
If you intend to replace or relocate an existing factory Defender function, especially:
- hazard lights
- rear fog
- rear wiper
- other multi-circuit factory functions
we recommend showing this information to your automotive electrician before placing your order.
Switch icons indicate the intended function only — they do not guarantee direct electrical compatibility with the original Land Rover circuit.
When in doubt, keeping the original factory switch in its original location is the simplest option.
